5. The San Francisco Airport uses ball bearings as a protection against earthquake. Total 267 pillars support the airport and each of the pillar rest on a steel ball that has a diameter of 1.5 meters. The ball is contained within a concave foundation. In case of an earthquake, the pillars roll on the base of the balls. Once the earthquake stops, the pillars resume their previous position.
